During
the months of April and May, Soroptimist International of South Lake
Tahoe presents its anti-abduction program, A Fighting Chance for 4th, 5th and
6th grade students in South Lake Tahoe. Each
year, more than 5,000 stranger abductions take place. Jaycee Lee Dugard
was one such child, when at the age of 11 she was abducted by two strangers
while walking to a school bus stop at South Lake Tahoe. In 1997, Soroptimist
International of South Lake Tahoe in cooperation with Jaycee's
mother, Terry Probyn, and local law enforcement
developed a cohesive program to make 5th grade children more safe.
The program was expanded in its second year to include fourth-graders. In addition to the
classroom presentations, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe
is fortunate enough to have received a training car in collaboration with our
local sheriff's department. We use the car during our presentations to show
children how to escape from a car. If you or your organization would like to
purchase a video of our training session of “A Fighting Chance” download this form. If
you would like any additional information regarding our program, A
Fighting Chance please Contact Us. Soroptimist International of South
Lake Tahoe sponsored a community pink ribbon parade on Sunday, September 6th 2009.
Over 2,000 people attended the parade which was an opportunity for the
community to come together and reinforce the strength we have to survive
while honoring Jaycee and her family. Our group sold pink t-shirts with all
proceeds going to the Jaycee Dugard Family Fund. We would like to thank the
many local organizations for their support during the community parade:
